In the skies above Canada and on operations around the globe, few aircraft match the reliability, versatility, and rugged performance of the Royal Canadian Air Force’s CC-130J Super Hercules. A modernized version of the legacy Hercules platform, the CC-130J plays a vital role in Canada’s air mobility and tactical transport capabilities—supporting both domestic and international missions with unmatched adaptability.

A Modern Workhorse

The CC-130J is the latest generation of the legendary C-130 Hercules, produced by Lockheed Martin. Canada currently operates a fleet of 17 CC-130Js, which entered service with the RCAF beginning in 2010. These aircraft are flown primarily by 436 Transport Squadron, based at 8 Wing Trenton, Ontario.

Equipped with advanced avionics, more powerful engines, and enhanced aerodynamics, the CC-130J offers significant improvements over its predecessors. It boasts increased speed, range, and payload capacity—making it ideally suited for the wide range of missions demanded by the Canadian Forces.

Tactical Airlift, Anywhere

The CC-130J is primarily used for tactical airlift, meaning it delivers troops, equipment, and supplies directly into operational theatres, including austere or semi-prepared airstrips. It can carry up to 92 passengers, 128 combat troops, or 74 litters for medical evacuation. The cargo bay can accommodate light armored vehicles, helicopters, or standard 463L pallets, making it incredibly flexible.

Its robust design allows it to land and take off from short, unpaved runways—critical for operations in remote areas such as the Canadian Arctic or deployed environments overseas.
