Harbour Air eBeaver (SAT/SUN)
In a world racing toward greener, cleaner technologies, a small but mighty aircraft is making a big splash. Meet the eBeaver – Harbour Air’s electrifying innovation and the world’s first fully electric commercial seaplane. This isn’t a startup fantasy or a far-off concept; it’s already soaring over the skies of British Columbia, turning heads and making history.
A Classic Reimagined
The eBeaver isn’t just any airplane. It’s a retrofitted de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver, a workhorse of bush flying known for its rugged reliability and cult-classic status among aviation buffs. In partnership with magniX, a Washington-based electric motor manufacturer, Harbour Air replaced the Beaver’s gas-powered piston engine with a powerful 750-horsepower magni500 electric propulsion system. The result? A clean, quiet, and remarkably efficient aircraft that’s leading the charge toward sustainable aviation.
The Historic First Flight
On December 10, 2019, the eBeaver made its maiden flight from the Fraser River near Vancouver, piloted by Harbour Air CEO and founder Greg McDougall. That day wasn’t just a test flight—it was a turning point in aviation history. Since then, the eBeaver has been undergoing rigorous testing and certification processes, as the team works to bring this revolutionary aircraft into full commercial service.
Why Electric Flight Matters
Let’s face it—aviation is one of the most challenging sectors to decarbonize. But Harbour Air is proving that big change can start small. By going electric, the eBeaver can reduce CO₂ emissions to zero for short-haul flights, slash noise pollution, and save on fuel, replacing fossil fuels with clean electricity. It’s a win for passengers, pilots, the planet—and the future of air travel.
Showcasing the Future of Aviation
In a proud moment for Canadian aerospace, the eBeaver will take center stage at the Abbotsford International Airshow, one of North America’s premier aviation events. As part of the Airshow’s growing commitment to highlight innovation and sustainability in aerospace, the eBeaver will be showcased alongside cutting-edge military jets and civilian aircraft. The eBeaver’s appearance is not just about spectacle – it is a powerful statement that eco-friendly aviation is no longer a dream, but a fast-approaching reality.
